A salary increase for all those who did not go on strike

President Ranil Wickramasinghe has decided to give a special salary increase to all non-executive government officials who reported to work yesterday (08) and today (09) and to issue a special commendation certificate so that it can be used for future promotions.

Accordingly, the President’s Media Unit states that the proposal presented by the President has been approved by the Cabinet of Ministers.

In this regard, the Secretary of the Ministry of Public Administration, Home Affairs, Provincial Councils and Local Government has been instructed to inform all the Ministry Secretaries, Department Heads and Provincial Chief Secretaries and to issue related circulars.

Yesterday (08) and today (09) two days of sick leave and strike were announced by several trade unions in certain services that do not belong to the executive service category of the public service.

The President’s Media Unit, issuing an announcement regarding this salary increase, said:

“The country, which was facing severe instability, was able to stabilize through the comprehensive economic reform program implemented by the government in the last two years, and in addition to the concessions given to the people, the government also provided a monthly stipend of ten thousand rupees to all public sector employees.

The Treasury Secretary also informed that under the existing financial situation, there is no possibility to provide an additional increase in salaries or allowances to the entire public service at this time without imposing an additional tax burden on the people.

The government has no ability to take decisions that will cause further pressure on the people who were under severe economic pressure in the past. On the other hand, it is absolutely unacceptable for certain government employees to make the entire public uncomfortable by making demands for additional salaries and allowances.

However, it has been identified as the government’s responsibility to carry out a special evaluation for non-executive government officials who reported to work on July 8 and 9, 2024 without engaging in unfair professional actions.
