The State Minister of Finance Shehan Semasinghe says that the debt stock of the Sri Lankan government has decreased by 2.76% by April 30, 2024.
That value is 803.2 billion rupees.
By December 31, 2023, the debt stock of the government is 29,150.4 billion rupees.
It has decreased to 28,347.2 billion rupees on 30 April 2024.
There has also been a significant decrease in the foreign debt stock of the country by 9.2%. Its financial value is 1,113.4 billion rupees.
The previous stock of foreign debt was 12,076.7 billion.
Accordingly, the amount of foreign debt has decreased to 10,963.3 billion rupees.
The country’s total domestic debt was 17,073.7 billion rupees.
It showed a slight increase by 1.8%, ie 310.2 billion rupees.
Accordingly, it has increased to 17,383.9 billion rupees.
The Minister of State for Finance said that this increase in local debt is the result of the government’s efforts to manage the budget without central bank financing.
He emphasized that the strengthening of the exchange rate has led to a decrease in the stock of foreign loans.
