The police have taken steps to reopen the Kandy-Jaffna main road which was temporarily closed due to the fire that broke out in a bakery product sales outlet in Akurana this morning (05).

The fire started at around 07:00 this morning and the investigators suspect that the fire was caused by an electrical leak.

Due to this, the three-storied building has been completely destroyed and the fire has also spread to an international school and paint shop located next to it.

When the fire started, the Alawathugoda police and local residents worked to evacuate the children from the school immediately, and the fire was prevented from spreading further by removing a large amount of paint from the shop.

Four buildings of the International School have been damaged due to the spread of the fire.

Officials of the Kandy Municipal Fire Service Unit, Police and Army personnel together with the local residents managed to put out the fire completely and then the road was reopened after removing the debris and clearing the road.

Alawathugoda Police urges drivers to exercise caution while driving as parts of the damaged building may fall onto the main road.
