An underworld criminal in Dubai has started threatening and extorting money from businessmen after two underworld strongmen, Uru Jua and Indra, who ruled in Kaduwela and Hanwella, were shot dead by police.
Police say that like Uru Jua and Indra, this criminal is also a disciple of Samayan.
Police have received information that he is still making phone calls from Dubai and threatening to extort money from sand and soil traders, people supplying manpower to companies in Hanwella and Kaduwela, and quarries.
A man who supplies manpower to a company in Jalthara has also been called from Dubai and threatened with a ransom of Rs. 50 lakhs and Rs. 500,000 per month if he continues to supply manpower, police said.
Due to non-payment of the ransom, the underworld criminal named Chami, while leading his followers from Dubai, had assaulted the businessman and injured him. It has also been revealed that a criminal named Chami was watching the attack from Dubai in a video call at the time.
Four underworld criminals have been arrested yesterday in connection with the assault by the officers of the Western Province Southern Crimes Division who were investigating the attack. Two are residents of Kegalle. Police say that a former member of the army is also among them. Investigations have also revealed that they had received an advance of Rs. 5,000 after promising to pay Rs. 50,000 for assaulting the businessman and injuring the businessman with a sword.
Among the arrested suspects is a man who witnessed the attack, video taped and gave it to a criminal named Chamia in Dubai, police said.
