Samagi Jana Balawega (SJB) Member of Parliament Mr. Iran Wickramaratne has resigned from the Parliamentary Committee on Public Enterprises (COPE) with effect from today (March 18).
He has served on the COPE Committee as an opposition MP before.
Recently, after the adjournment of the Parliament, he was again appointed as a member of the COPE Committee.
“The COPE Committee has been constituted to ensure compliance with financial discipline in public corporations and other quasi-government institutions in which the government has a financial stake. By appointing a member of the ruling party as its chairman, the committee will fail to achieve the objectives of controlling the executive arm of the government,” he said in a statement.
The recent appointment of Mr. Rohitha Abeygunawardena as the COPE chairman has been severely criticized by the opposition members.
