The Railway Department has decided to install security gates for 400 railway crossings with immediate effect.
Railway General Manager H.M.K.W. Bandara said that 1200 employees will be recruited for that.
It is planned to depute the people recruited under the government’s multi-tasking scheme.
The General Manager of Railways stated that in the discussion held with the Ministry of Finance, the agreement was obtained for these recruitments.
The highest number of crossings without safety gates are on Puttalam Road and Coastal Railway.
The General Manager of Railways stated that although the police had installed gates for some of these crossings, after the recent accident at the Puttalam Arachchikattuwa Maiyawa railway crossing, the police informed that the gates will be removed.
