Anuradha Jayaratne, State Minister for Justice and Prison Affairs, says that a program of house arrest will be implemented this year for all those who are guilty of civil offences.
The Minister of State says that this program is being implemented to reduce the overcrowding in prisons.
He said that after giving the report of the committee appointed to prepare the laws for this purpose, the relevant laws are being prepared by the Law Drafting Division.
He emphasizes that after the completion of the necessary steps, it will be submitted to the Parliament and made into a law this year.
He has also mentioned that with the implementation of this program, several acts like the Bail Act will have to be amended.
