    Sri Lankan Fishermen Kidnapped by Somali Pirates were Rescued

    The multi-day trawler “Lorenzo Putha 4” that went missing in the Arabian Sea has been rescued. Along with that, 03 Somali pirates were also arrested.

    The Government of Sri Lanka has been informed that the vessel was rescued by the Seychelles Coast Guard and the 06 fishermen on board were rescued safely.

    This was officially informed by the Seychelles Navy today (29) to Mr. Sagala Ratnayake, Senior Advisor to the President on National Security and Chief of Staff to the President.

    The Seychelles Coast Guard has further informed that it is currently being taken to Victoria Port in Seychelles.

    President Wavel Ramkalawan’s office had announced that the Seychelles forces rescued a Sri Lankan fishing boat hijacked by Somali pirates and that ‘the Seychelles special forces took full control of the vessel and boarded the boat with utmost courage to save our Sri Lankan brothers’.

    The multi-day fishing vessel ‘Lorenzo Putha 4’ started its maiden voyage from Dikowita fishing harbour on January 12 with 06 fishermen.

    The Department of Fisheries informed that the vessel was captured by Somali pirates in the Arabian Sea, 1,160 nautical miles from land.

    Accordingly, the Sri Lanka Navy informed the joint maritime force consisting of 40 countries located in Bahrain to investigate the missing vessel.

    The Seychelles Coast Guard launched a special operation to search for the multi-day fishing vessel “Lorenzo Putha 4” where they managed to find the fishing vessel that was in the grip of Somali pirates.

    Under the guidance of the President’s Senior Adviser on National Security, Chief of Staff Sagala Ratnayake, operations to bring the fishing vessel to Sri Lanka have been launched under the special supervision of the Sri Lanka Navy.
