Sri Lanka Ports Authority Additional Management Director Operations Laal Weerasinghe says that Colombo Port has been used as a transit point by many ships due to the Houthi rebels’ attacks in the Red Sea.
He said that due to this, there has been more traffic than usual in the port of Colombo.
Due to the crisis in the Red Sea, ships that used to come through the Suez Canal are now coming through the South African continent.
Therefore, due to the strategic location of the port of Colombo, ships transiting the port can easily access the Middle East, South Asia and East Asia.
Colombo Port is the first port of call for ships passing through South Africa.
Accordingly, most of the ships going to the Middle East region and India are now arriving at the port of Colombo.
Sri Lanka Ports Authority Additional Management Director Operations Laal Weerasinghe stated that re-exports have increased so far.
He also said that the country is getting more dollars.
