A recent audit report has revealed that the current speed limit testing equipment owned by the Sri Lanka Police is in a non-functional condition.
This has been revealed by the audit report issued by the Auditor General’s Department for the year 2022 regarding the financial status of government institutions.
According to the audit report, the last time the Sri Lanka Police purchased speed limit testing equipment was in 2016. Only 25 machines were purchased then.
Prior to that, 30 machines were purchased in 2013 and 100 machines were purchased in 2010, according to the audit report.
It is also stated that a large number of those equipments are currently inactive. In the period of 2018-2022, the Traffic Control and Road Safety Police Division has applied to get 500 automatic speed traps annually, but not a single machine has been received since 2016.
The audit report shows that the National Assembly has set aside 150 million rupees for the purchase of speedometers in relation to road safety.
