The United Postal Union Front said it had started its two-day token strike amid moves to cancel the leave of all postal workers.
Its co-convener Chintaka Bandara said that the government’s plans to sell the Nuwara Eliya and Kandy post offices should be abandoned.
The Department of Posts had announced yesterday that it has taken steps to cancel the leave of all postal workers on the three days of November 8, 9 and 10 with immediate effect.
In a statement, Postmaster General S.R.W.MRP Satkumara has stated that no post office belonging to the Department of Posts will be closed.
He has also said that the agreement to transfer the Nuwara Eliya Post Office building to the Urban Development Authority has been informed to the President’s Secretary to make room for a more effective investment opportunity as per the government’s policy.
It is stated in the announcement that Minister Bandula Gunawardena has assured that the Urban Development Authority will provide a suitable building to run the Nuwara Eliya Post Office instead.
