Postal workers will engage in 48 hours of industrial action from midnight tonight.

Chintaka Bandara, convener of the United Postal Trade Union Front, said that the union will take action against the government’s decision to take over the Nuwara Eliya Post Office building for a tourist hotel.

About 27,000 employees attached to the entire postal department are scheduled to join this industrial action.

The Nuwara Eliya Post Office Building, designated as an archaeological site, was built by the British in 1894.

It is a Tudor-style two-storied building painted in red. The building is made entirely of brick.

Although this building was proposed to be used for a hotel project in the year 2017, the then government had to stop it due to opposition from many parties and the union actions of the postal workers.
