A parliamentary investigation committee has been appointed to look into an alleged assault between State Minister Diana Gamage and Samagi Janabalaweg MP Sujith Perera, which reportedly took place near the library on the lower floor of the Parliament complex. The committee, led by Deputy Speaker Ajith Rajapaksa, includes members Chamal Rajapaksa, Ramesh Pathirana, Gayantha Karunathilaka, and Imitiaz Bakeer Markar.
State Minister Diana Gamage has requested an investigation into the reported assault and later filed a complaint with the police. She was subsequently admitted to Sri Jayawardenepura Hospital for medical treatment.
According to her complaint to the Welikada Police, the state minister alleged that she was assaulted by two MPs at the Parliament complex.
It has been reported that a heated argument between State Minister Diana Gamage and Samagi Jana Balawegaya Anuradhapura District Councilor Rohana Bandara led to the altercation. During the incident, MP Sujith Sanjay Perera, a member of the same party, recorded the incident on his mobile phone, reportedly exacerbating the situation.
While Member of Parliament Sujith Sanjay Perera has denied assaulting State Minister Gamage, a photo circulating on social media appears to show a man holding the state minister’s neck. Both parties have submitted complaints to the police regarding the incident, and the investigation committee has been tasked with examining the matter further.
