Meteorologists have warned that 12 districts of the island have a high possibility of thundershowers and lightning during this evening or at night.
The risk is present in North-Central, Eastern and Central Provinces and Badulla Kegalle, Vavuniya, Mullaitivu and Mannar districts.
Thunderstorms may cause temporary gusty winds in those areas. People are kindly requested to take necessary measures to reduce the accidents caused by lightning.
Safety measures:
The Meteorological Department advises the public to follow the following safety measures in case of lightning and thunder.
- Do not stay outdoors or under trees and stay inside a protected building or closed vehicle.
- Avoid staying in open places like paddy fields, tea plantations, playgrounds and reservoirs.
- Avoid using corded phones and electrical appliances.
- Avoid using open vehicles like bicycles, tractors and boats.
- Be careful as trees and power lines may fall due to strong winds.
- In an emergency, seek assistance from local disaster management officials.
