Due to the escalating flood situation in Matara district caused by heavy rains, all schools in the district will remain closed on Monday (09) and Tuesday (10). This decision was made by the Disaster Management Center in response to the increasing disaster risk.
To address the crisis, the army has deployed 600 soldiers for emergency relief services in Galle and Matara districts. At a meeting held at the Matara District Secretariat, officials discussed the current risk situation and the precautionary measures in place.
Key points discussed include the continuous operation of irrigation pumping stations, ensuring the safety of the Nadugala Dam embankment under the supervision of security forces, and the deployment of naval, army, police, and disaster bureau vessels and buffer vehicles. Additionally, the Fisheries Department has prepared boats for potential use.
Collaborative efforts between divisional secretariats and local government bodies are underway to provide essential supplies, including cooked and dry food, to displaced, trapped, and vulnerable individuals. Drainage activities are being coordinated by irrigation, highways, and local authorities to manage the floodwaters effectively.
The situation is being closely monitored, and further updates will be provided as necessary.
