In a startling incident, a person involved in the ‘beedi’ business has filed a complaint with the Walasmulla Police, accusing a group of officers, including the Officer in Charge (OIC) of the Tangalle Excise Unit, of kidnapping and assaulting him, as well as coercing him into surrendering 10 lakh rupees.
The complainant, identified as KP Nishanka and a resident of Walasmulla, Rajapuragoda, Marakatiya, revealed to the police that he had been engaged in a business associated with beedi leaves. He further disclosed that the license permitting this operation had expired on June 26.
Nishanka informed the Police that, on the 18th, a team of officials from the Tangalle Excise Unit arrived at his residence, indicating their intent to seize the beedi leaves in his possession and initiate legal proceedings. Shockingly, they demanded a sum of 14 lakh rupees to close the impending case unofficially.
According to his complaint, Nishanka was forcibly abducted and transported in a three-wheeler, where he was coerced into surrendering 10 lakh rupees before being released.
The police have reported that the businessman is currently hospitalized, and they are actively investigating the allegations and circumstances surrounding this incident.
