Deputy Health Services Director General G. Wijesuriya said that the government has started several special programs to solve the problems arising in the health sector due to the departure of specialist doctors.
Accordingly, after the retirement of a specialist, if there is no other doctor in that place or until another specialist is appointed, he will be able to serve on a contract basis for a maximum period of one year,
Mr. Wijesuriya claims that even after a year, in the event that a specialist doctor has not been appointed to that place, he has been provided with the facilities to extend the service.
The government has also taken steps to increase the number of specialists recruited to train.
It takes about 5 years for a doctor to become a specialist.
About 600 doctors have gone abroad.
He said that a large number of specialist doctors are also scheduled to come to Sri Lanka in the future.
Mr. Wijesuriya also stated that if about 50% of them come to Sri Lanka, the crisis in the health sector in this country will be resolved.
