The National Livestock Development Board and the milk production institutes have made a request to the ministry in charge to stop the import of milk powder.

Taking into consideration that milk production in this country has increased again by now, the relevant institutions have made the request to the government.

According to these requests, the Minister of Agriculture, Mr. Mahinda Amaraweera, has immediately instructed the livestock officials to prepare a report regarding the increase in liquid milk production in this country.

Minister Mahinda Amaraweera says that after the relevant report is prepared, it will be submitted to the Cabinet and further decisions will be taken regarding the import of milk powder.

It has been revealed that the National Livestock Development Board alone has raised milk production to 2,599,617 liters in the last six months.

Milko Company’s production has also increased to 19,152,766 liters of milk.

This amount is an increase of about 30% compared to last year.

Attention has also been drawn to the fact that the Pelwatta Dairy Factory has stored a large quantity of products related to liquid milk in this country.

Unofficial reports have also indicated that the company has not been able to sell 500 metric tons of full cream milk powder.
