The government has decided to restructure and upgrade the Sri Lanka Railways completely.

The Council of Ministers, which met yesterday, has decided to appoint an expert committee to get the necessary recommendations for that.

Minister Bandula Gunawardena said at the Cabinet press conference today (25) that the Cabinet has instructed the President’s Secretary for that.

Minister Bandula Gunawardena had stated yesterday (24) that he will take a strict decision on the railway service due to some measures of the railway workers which are causing inconvenience to the passengers.

“If the trains bringing passengers to Colombo stop suddenly, it leaves thousands of people who want to go to work stranded, a strict decision should be made on this. I have been doing this for so long. Worked very cooperatively recently. There was never a strike; the drivers may have some political interest. I will try to tell the cabinet today. Passengers’ demand was to privatize the train. It can never be done. I told them to give us time to make this an authority without privatizing it. Even after that, if the people are being stranded in this way, by the Railway Service, then I hope to convey a very strict decision to the cabinet.”
