Minister of State for Finance Ranjith Siyambalapitiya says that steps will be taken to relax the import restrictions of 300 essential goods.
This announcement has been issued a month after the government relaxed the import restrictions on 300 other items including electronic equipment, sanitary equipment and food items with effect from June 09.
However, with the government’s stand on the matter, it is not expected that any quick steps will be taken to remove the vehicle import restrictions soon.
Commenting on this last month, the state minister said that under the current economic situation, it is still not possible to allow the import of vehicles.
Meanwhile, Sri Lanka Customs had recently addressed the Sectoral Oversight Committee (SOC) on National Economic and Physical Planning to focus on achieving its target revenue, saying that the task will be difficult as long as vehicle import restrictions remain in place.
