President Ranil Wickramasinghe took steps today (09) to re-appoint Mr. C.D. Wickramaratne to the post of Inspector General of Police.
The Police Headquarters also announced that the President has made this appointment for a period of 03 months from today, as per the provisions of the Constitution of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka and subject to the approval of the Constituent Assembly.
It is special that this appointment was made by the President two weeks after the completion of the three months service period on June 25 of Inspector General of Police C.D. Wickramaratne who retired on March 25 after attaining the age of 60.
Mr. C.D. Wickramaratne had been given the first service extension to be effective from the date of his retirement after reaching the age of 60, but has he been given another service extension this time? Otherwise, there is no clear interpretation so far whether the retired Inspector General of Police is called back and appointed to the post of Inspector General of Police. However, Mr. C.D. Wickramaratne is now the Inspector General of Sri Lanka Police again.
This situation is recorded in police history as the re-appointment of a retired IGP. C.D. Wickramaratne gets this appointment because he was re-appointed to the post of IGP two weeks after his retirement.
Information from the Presidential Secretariat revealed that when this appointment was given by President Ranil Wickramasinghe, Minister in charge, Tiran Alas was also present.
