4 were arrested for assaulting a monk and two women and exposing them on social media

Navagamuwa Police have arrested four people who broke into the Sri Sumanarama temple located in the Rakshapana area of Upper Bomiriya Kaduwela and assaulted Dharma preacher Pallegama Sumana (44) and two women who were staying with him in his room.

Navagamuwa Police say this incident occurred the day before yesterday (06) at night.

The suspects, Sanath Nandana (47), Harsha Eranga (30), Chamil Kumara Gunawardena ((40) and Kavinda Arambawatta (30), who are residents of Kaduwela Upper Bomiriya, have been arrested.

Navagamuwa Police mentioned that these four suspects were arrested yesterday early in the morning (07).

Navagamuwa Police mentions that this monk is the only resident of this temple. The police also say that while two women were in the temple, the villagers attacked the monk and the two women, injured them and attacked the temple’s property and damaged them. The police said that the injured monk and a woman have been hospitalized.

At that time, the police went to the temple and took a 22-year-old woman into police custody for her protection, and she is a resident of Kelaniya Pilapitiya.

The Ministry of Public Security had also issued a press release today (08) stating that the Minister of Public Security, Tiran Alas, had ordered the immediate arrest of the persons who stripped and assaulted a monk and two women.

“A video involving a monk and two women is being shared on social media. The monk and two women are stripped naked and beaten with sticks by a group of people. The monk is also seen being beaten with sticks by some people.

Yesterday (07.07.2023) the Minister of Public Security Tiran Alas has ordered the Western Province Senior Deputy Inspector General of Police Deshabandhu Tennakoon and the Navagamuwa Police Station Commander to immediately arrest the people who took the law into their hands and attacked the women with sticks and to implement the law immediately.”
