There is no tsunami risk from the earthquake that was felt in Colombo

An earthquake has occurred today in the sea south-east of Hambantota in the Indian Ocean.

Mr. Mahinda Seneviratne, senior geologist of the Geological Survey and Mines Bureau, says that although the shock was felt in several areas including Colombo, the possibility of occuring a tsunami is very low.

An earthquake of 5.8 on the Richter scale has occurred.

He also emphasized that according to the magnitude of the shock and other factors, it did not cause damage to the buildings.

He also mentioned that the earthquake occurred at a depth of less than 10 kilometers, 1000 kilometers away from Hambantota in the south-east direction of the Indian Ocean at around 12.59 pm today.
