Trade, Commerce and Food Safety Minister Mr. Nalin Fernando says that local entrepreneurs will have the opportunity to export more than 7000 products to the United Kingdom without any duty.

The opportunity is available through the New UK GSP Scheme – Developing Countries Trading Scheme (DCTS).

The Minister has stated this in a discussion held today (12) at the Ministry of Trade for the restoration of the industries related to the construction sector with the executives of the manufacturing companies related to the paint and tile industries.

Commenting there, the Minister has stated that although the prices of imported goods, including essential items, have gone down significantly compared to the change in the dollar, it is a problem that the prices of local manufacturing industries have not decreased.

Minister Naleen Fernando has stated that even though the government restricts imports to encourage local producers, it should not be taken advantage of to gain unnecessarily large profits or to make up for the losses incurred during the last crisis by making the consumer uncomfortable.

The minister has stated that the government will not launch large-scale construction-related projects in the next 5 years.

It has been pointed out that several such projects, which do not have proper use under the current economic situation, were stopped with the approval of the Cabinet.

Accordingly, the Minister of Trade has stated that the construction industry should focus on increasing the construction done with low-cost raw materials through new technical methods targeting the common people.
