According to the State Commercial Miscellaneous Statutory Corporation, permission was granted to import one million eggs from India daily.
Its chairman Mr. Asiri Walisundara said that the Animal Production and Health Department has decided to bring the eggs to Sri Lanka after a study done on the need for eggs in Sri Lanka.
He also mentioned that there are large public requests to release imported eggs to the retail market.
But Mr. Asiri Walisundara mentioned that no decision has been taken so far regarding the release of imported eggs to the retail market.
However, as before, imported eggs will only be released to egg-related industries including hotels and bakeries, he said.
