According to foreign reports, there may be a tsunami threat to several islands due to the 7.7 magnitude earthquake that occurred in the Pacific Ocean today.
The US Geological Survey said Friday’s quake was near the Loyalty Islands.
It was 37 km (23 mi) deep.
The epicenter was located southwest of southeast Fiji, north of New Zealand and east of Australia where the Coral Sea meets the Pacific Ocean.
The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said waves of up to 3 meters (10 feet) could hit Vanuatu.
New Zealand’s National Emergency Management Agency said they are still assessing the possibility of a tsunami.
High waves of up to 1 m (3 ft) are forecasted for Fiji, New Caledonia, Kiribati and New Zealand.
It is also said that small waves may occur in Papua New Guinea, Guam and other Pacific islands.
