    Special order from the President

    President Ranil Wickremesinghe has instructed the legal departments to draft strict laws to prevent child abuse.

    The President has pointed out the need to quickly suppress the ongoing child abuse by some teachers and elders as well as various sections of the society.

    He has emphasized the need for a legal system that provides severe punishment for such acts.

    The President gave these instructions while drawing attention to the continuing reports of incidents such as the death of a 16-year-old girl who jumped from the top floor of a Kalutara hotel, and the abuse of two 16-year-old children by a Kalutara tuition class teacher.

    President Ranil Wickramasinghe has also mentioned that a separate set of laws should be introduced to protect the children of the country.

    For that purpose, the President has pointed out the need to amend the existing laws and has informed to pay attention to the abuse of children using mobile phones, social media, etc. while preparing this legal system.

    Accordingly, after the drafting of the relevant laws, they are to be submitted to the Parliament and passed.

    The President, who has pointed out the need to make changes in school curricula, has also emphasized the need for a new dialogue and awareness program on parent-child relationships and mental health at home.

    The attention of President Ranil Wickramasinghe has also been focused on the implementation of a special program at the level of public and private institutions to develop the attitudes of the society in order to create a broad-minded child by understanding the mentality of the child while bringing strict laws to protect the child generation.
