Sri Lanka has rejected the decision of the United States to designate the current governor of the North West Province, Admiral of the Fleet Wasantha Karnagoda, as ineligible to enter the United States.

Foreign Minister Ali Sabri has expressed Sri Lanka’s serious concern regarding this decision to US Ambassador Julie Chung today (27).

The government has expressed regret to the US government, as a long-term bilateral partner of Sri Lanka, that the United States has taken such a unilateral action without following due process.

The Minister stated that it is an unfortunate situation that this announcement is issued against the backdrop of Sri Lanka’s approach to addressing national unity and reconciliation and the government has made progress in strengthening the country’s democratic governance and reconciliation structures.

Despite these challenges, Sri Lanka will continue to work to achieve reconciliation, economic recovery and socio-economic development, the Sri Lankan government has informed the US ambassador.
