There is a possibility of earthquakes in Sri Lanka due to a new tectonic boundary

Director General of Geology and Mines Bureau, Mr. M. M. J. A. Ajith Prema says that there is a risk of creating a new tectonic boundary between 900 and 1000 kilometers away from Sri Lanka.

Joining a press conference held today (26), he said that because of that risk, there is a tendency for earthquakes to occur in Sri Lanka.

The Bureau of Geological Survey and Mines mentioned here that 09 earthquakes have been reported in the country so far this year.

The bureau mentioned that it was the first time that 09 such earthquakes were reported in the country within a period of 04 months.

Majority of the earthquakes occurred in the interior of the country and the rest of the earthquakes occurred along the coast of the country.
