According to the Ministry of Agriculture, the renovation of 497 abandoned tanks located in 11 districts of the country has been started.
That is under the World Bank financial allocation of 44 million dollars.
The renovation works of 72 tanks in the Trincomalee district and 29 tanks in the Anuradhapura district have already started.
Under the Climate Friendly Irrigation Agriculture Project under the Ministry of Agriculture, the renovation of those tanks is being done.
The aim of the program is to provide the necessary water to raise the living conditions of the farmers in the villages suffering from lack of water for cultivation due to climatic effects.
The number of abandoned tanks identified under the project is 870.
The Department of Agricultural Development is also planning to rehabilitate 30 more tanks this year.
The government has given 300 million rupees for that.
