Import, manufacture, sale and domestic use of 7 types of plastic/polythene products will be banned from June 1.

Accordingly, single-use plastic drinking straws and stirrers, single-use plates, cups (except yogurt cups), spoons, forks and knives, plastic flower garlands, and plastic dippers, including yogurt spoons made of plastic, will be made prohibited.

Proposals regarding the import, production, sale, and local use of 07 single-use plastic/polythene products were discussed earlier in the Cabinet meeting.

It was decided to appoint an expert committee to examine the proposals and submit a report with recommendations.

As recommended by the report presented by the said expert committee, the Cabinet approved the proposal submitted by the Minister of Environment to ban the importation, production, sale, and local use of the said plastic products in the country from the relevant date.

This step is taken to control single-use plastic and polythene waste.
