Trade unions in several essential services have organized a strike against the new income tax.
Nearly 40 trade unions in the essential services sector will be on strike next Wednesday 08, says the United Port Trade Unions Union.
It is reported that the petroleum, electricity, port, water and health unions are among the unions that have organized the strike.
The Ceylon Electricity Board’s Joint Trade Union Alliance said that they will be on strike on that day.
If the government fails to amend the relevant tax policy, the Petroleum Public Employees’ Union announced that they will also participate in the strike.
The new Advance Personal Income Tax (APIT) was implemented from 01 January 2023.
