A mother and her son were killed in a motorcycle accident that occurred near Gokarella Polgolla Pirivena on the Kurunegala – Dambulla main road when a motorcycle tried to overtake an SLTB bus and collided.
The Gokarella Police say that the mother and son were killed by the rear wheels of the bus running over them in the accident that took place this afternoon.
A mother named Kamalavathi (62) and her son named Rathnayake (39), who were residents of the Neeramulla area of Malsiripura, died in this accident.
The bus and the motorcycle were running from Dambulla toward Kurunegala. When the motorcycle was going to overtake the bus, the motorcycle collided with the bus. The police say that the motorcycle lost its balance and overturned, and the two riders were thrown under the bus and crushed by the rear wheel of the bus.
The police say that the accident occurred while the motorcyclist was traveling with his mother to see the well-being of his wife, who is being treated at the Kurunegala Teaching Hospital due to an illness.
The Police Media Spokesperson’s Office states that the reckless and careless driving of the motorcyclist caused the accident.
