Mr. Anura Shantha, who is an SJB candidate for the Hambantota Municipal Council(MC) and also a member of the municipal council, was arrested by the officers of the Hambantota Headquarters Police yesterday (24) regarding an assault on the Deputy Chairman of Samagi Education Employees Union.
Mr. Ramith Gamini, who works as a teacher at Matara Mahinda Rajapaksa College, was attacked the day before yesterday (23) in the morning in the Idiminna area of Hambantota.
Mr. Ramith Gamini, the deputy chairman of the Samagi Education Employees Union, resides in Hambantota. The police say that Mr. Anura Shantha, a member of the Municipal Council, also resides in the same area. Police say that when the Deputy Chairman of the Samagi Education Employees Union came to purchase goods from a shop near the house of the member of MC, he came out of the house and committed this attack.
The Deputy Chairman of Samagi Education Employees Union, who the MC member attacked, has been admitted to Hambantota Hospital and received treatment.
Investigations revealed that the reason for the assault was a month-long dispute between the two. It is said that the beginning of the dispute was a conflict of opinion during the applications of the candidates.
Police say that the arrested suspect, the MC member was released on bail of Rs. 300,000 after being present to the court.
