According to the Electricity Act 2009, the Public Utilities Commission has unanimously decided to expedite the Ceylon Electricity Board tariff proposal.

In addition to this, the Public Utilities Commission has also reached a decision to seek legal opinion regarding the implementation of the cabinet request on interim charges as it has been in effect since the past, its chairman Mr. Janaka Ratnayake said.

On January 9, 2023, the Cabinet of Ministers considered the proposal submitted by the Minister of Electricity and Energy regarding the revision of electricity tariffs.

The Cabinet further observed that the Treasury is unable to provide the necessary funds to the Ceylon Electricity Board due to the current financial situation of the country, therefore there is no other option but to revise the existing electricity tariffs to ensure continuous electricity supply.

The government has focused on implementing these proposed tariffs while minimizing the impact on electricity consumers as much as possible.
