When President Ranil Wickramasinghe came to a temple in the Nallur area during his visit to Jaffna today (15th) for Thai Pongal celebrations, a group of people came to the place and expressed their protest to the President.
The protestors gathered there demanded the release of land in the north, justice for the people who are said to have disappeared, and the release of the Tamil prisoners in custody.
At that time, about 150 people from the Disappeared Persons Association and some other civil organizations protested stating that they should also go to the temple where the President visited.
It is reported that a group of Jaffna University students attended the event.
A tense situation arose when the security forces refused the request.
The police, who took steps to control the situation, fired water cannons and dispersed the crowd.
