Cabinet informs not to accept Election deposits from candidates of the local government election

Mr. Sajith Premadasa, the leader of the opposition, is questioning the order given by the Cabinet of Ministers to stop accepting the Election deposit of the candidates running for the upcoming local government elections.

It is stated that a letter signed by the Secretary of the Ministry of Public Administration and Home Affairs has been sent to all the district secretaries to stop the acceptance of Election deposits for the local government elections until further notice.

The Secretary has also mentioned in the letter that this step is taken according to a decision taken by the Council of Ministers.

The Election Commission has now called for nominations for the local government elections.

The election officials have also started taking deposits for the elections.

In such a situation, the opposition leader Sajith Premadasa said that the cabinet has decided to order all the district secretaries to stop accepting election deposits until further notice.

“The decision taken by the cabinet is an illegal decision that violates the constitution. He said that Samagi Jana Balawega is ready to come forward with the whole country against this arbitrary process taken by the government to violate people’s sovereignty and democracy.

Opposition leader Mr. Sajith Premadasa said this in a special statement at the opposition leader’s office in Colombo this afternoon.
