Ukraine says no to the ceasefire announced by Russia

Ukraine has rejected a 36-hour unilateral ceasefire announced by Russia for its Orthodox Christmas celebrations.

Russian President Vladimir Putin announced the ceasefire at the special request of the Fathers of the Orthodox Church. Russia has not announced any conditions for the cease-fire.

In a statement issued by the Russian President’s Office, the President hereby instructs the Minister of Defense of the Russian Federation to impose a ceasefire regime in Ukraine for a period of 36 hours, taking into account the request made by the Orthodox Church.

Accordingly, this ceasefire was announced by Russia as a one-sided ceasefire and it was expected that there would be a good response from Ukraine. However, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyi declared that he would continue to attack Russian forces.

In this regard, the President of Ukraine has said that he cannot trust Russia’s cease-fire and therefore has given notice to his forces to continue to attack.
