Nilantha Jayawardena now holds the highest position of the police after the post of IGP

The Inspector General of Police has appointed Senior DIG Nilantha Jayawardena to the post of Senior DIG in charge of Administration, the highest rank after the Inspector General of Sri Lanka Police.

After the Inspector General of Police, Mr. Nilantha Jayawardena is the most senior officer currently serving in the Sri Lanka Police.

Mr. Nilantha Jayawardena, who is working as the head of the police’s auxiliary service, was appointed as the head of the police administrative division by the Inspector General of Police on the 2nd, and today it was confirmed.

Senior Deputy Inspector General of Police Nandana Munasinghe retired from police service on the 21st and a vacancy occurred in that position. The Inspector General of Police had already submitted his recommendations to the National Police Commission through the Secretary of the Ministry of Public Security to appoint Mr. Nilantha Jayawardena, the most senior officer of the police, to that vacancy. Accordingly, the Inspector General of Police has made this appointment with the approval of those departments.

Mr. Nilantha Jayawardena joined the police service as an apprentice Assistant Superintendent of Police on February 23, 1998. Senior DIG Lalith S. Patinayake who is currently serving as the chief of North West Province, and Senior Deputy Inspector General of Police Deshbandu Tennakoon, who is serving as the Chief of Police in charge of Western Province, are also officers who joined the police service on the same day as Mr. Nilantha Jayawardena.

Among these people, Mr. Nilantha Jayawardena was promoted first to the position of Senior DIG on February 28, 2019, Mr. Lalith S. Pathinayake had been promoted to the post of Senior DIG on November 20, 2019 and Mr. Deshbandu Tennakon was promoted to the post of Senior Deputy Inspector General of Police on January 01, 2020.

Mr. Nilantha Jayawardena in 2033, Mr. Lalith S. Pathinayake in 2032, and Mr. Deshbandu Thennakoon in 2031 will be retired at the age of 60.
