Sri Lanka Public Utilities Commission Chairman Mr. Janaka Ratnayake says that it is expected that there will be no increase in the electricity bill in the near future.

He said while attending a press conference held today (01) that houses belonging to the category of low electricity consumers will not be able to afford a huge tariff increase proposed by the Ceylon Electricity Board.

Chairman Janaka Rathnayake said that the proposal for considering a tariff increase by the Electricity Board should be submitted to the PUCSL first and the Cabinet cannot take decisions in this regard.

He said that he is ready to discuss it only if that method is reached.

Mr. Janaka Ratnayake also said that the cabinet is preparing to present the proposal by misinterpreting the act and putting the increase in electricity tariffs under ‘general policy plans’.

Mr. Rathnayake said that the method of increasing the electricity tariffs is clearly stated separately in the Act and also mentioned that he hopes to proceed only if the proposal to increase the tariffs is received from the Electricity Board.

The CEB announced yesterday (Dec. 31) that it is expected to present the newly proposed electricity tariff increase to the Cabinet tomorrow (02).
