Dhanushka Gunathilaka, the opening batsman of the Sri Lankan team, who went to Australia to represent the Sri Lankan team for the Twenty20 World Cup, has been arrested by the Sydney police on charges of sexual assault.
Foreign media have reported that the Sri Lankan team, which lost the match against England, left for their country yesterday without Dhanushka Gunathilaka.
Dhanushka Gunathilaka has been arrested in relation to an incident in which Dhanushka Gunathilaka allegedly sexually assaulted a woman in an eastern suburb of Sydney and the Sydney Police have refused to grant him police bail.
The police have also inspected a place in the Rose Bay area where the alleged molestation took place.
After the 29-year-old woman complained to the police last week, 31-year-old Mr. Gunathilaka was arrested at around 1 am on Sunday.It is said that the complaint made to the police states four allegations of molestation by Dhanushka Gunathilake to the woman who met after an online relationship that went too far.
The country’s secret police units have also started investigations in this regard. Accordingly, Dhanushka Gunathilake was arrested at a hotel on Sussex Street in Sydney CBD. After the arrest, he was taken to the local police station. He is due to appear in Downing Center Local Court tomorrow (Monday).
Dhanushka Gunathilaka was included in this year’s T20 squad due to an injury but refrained from playing and Sri Lanka Cricket has not yet made an official announcement in this regard.
