The Gampaha Malvatuhiripitiya Police have started an investigation to arrest a bus driver who ran over and killed a Weliweriya police sergeant who was travelling on a police motorcycle in uniform and abandoned the bus which is used to transport the parliamentary staff.
The accident took place near Malkele Junction on the Gampaha Kiridivela road on Saturday.
The Malvatuhiripitiya police stated that the accident occurred when the bus carrying the staff members collided with the officer’s bike when returning from a party of the parliamentary staff members at a hotel located in Ja-Ala.
It has been found from the police investigations that at the time of this accident, apart from the driver and assistant, 09 members of the parliamentary staff were travelling in the bus. Police say that all of them who were not kind enough to at least take the police officer to the hospital fled with the driver after the accident.
Only the assistant remained with the bus.
A resident of Polgahawela has been working as the driver of the bus. The police say that during the investigation, information is received that he was drunk.
After the accident, the local residents took the police officer to the Gampaha hospital, but he was already dead when he was taken, the police said.
