According to the Ministry of Wildlife and Forest Conservation, it has been decided to convert Nayaru, Nandikadal and Sambalativ lagoons into forest conservation zones.
Minister Mahinda Amaraweera said that the Cabinet of Ministers has already approved the designation of Sambalativ Lagoon as a forest conservation zone, which is rich in biodiversity.
Minister Mahinda Amaraweera has taken steps to appoint a special committee to study the facts to protect the Nayaru and Nandikadal lagoons.
The committee chaired by Secretary of the Ministry of Wildlife and Forest Conservation Mr. Chandra Herath, Secretary of the Ministry of Fisheries Mr. Indu Ratnayake, includes representatives from the Department of Wildlife, the Ministry of Agriculture and the National Aquatic Resources Research and Development Agency.
The minister has also informed to give a report in this regard within 02 weeks.
