The Gampaha High Court today acquitted Gampaha Superintendent of Police Lakshman Coorey and former LTTE strongman Selvaraja Thirubatharan alias Moril, who were arrested for killing 16 people including a former minister Mr. Jeyaraj Fernandopulle and were remanded in custody for 14 years.

It was after announcing the verdict in the murder case.

On April 6, 2008, Minister Jeyaraj Fernandopulle and 16 others were killed in a suicide bomb attack near Weliveriya Kanthi Stadium. There, another 84 people were injured and attempted to be killed.

Lakshman Coorey, who was working as Gampaha Superintendent of Police at that time, and LTTE intelligence officer involved in this murder were arrested by the CID.

The Attorney General’s Department had filed 31 extreme charges regarding those murders and attempted murders. Today the Gampaha High Court acquitted them both after a long trial in the court.
