Ceylon Electricity Board says that problems have arisen to operate power plants due to a lack of sufficient fuel oil.

The board stated that the operation of the fuel power plants has been restricted due to the non-availability of daily required fuel oil.

As a result, electricity has to be cut for a period of 3 hours daily, the Ceylon Electricity Board points out.

The daily fuel oil required for the operation of Yugadanavi, Sapugaskanda and Bach fuel plants is 2500 metric tons.

But these days, 1400 metric tons of fuel oil or less has been received, Ceylon Electricity Board points out.

The board also says that the operation of power plants is limited in that situation.

At present, hydropower production is operating at 60% maximum capacity and the number of megawatts added to the system is 1340.

The Norochcholai coal power plant will add nearly 600 MW of electricity capacity to the national grid.

The Electricity Board points out that the electricity capacity obtained from the hydroelectric power generation and coal power plant is not enough to meet the electricity requirement of 2100 MW.

An official of the Electricity Board also said that since the Sapugaskanda Refinery has restarted its operations, it is expected that the fuel needed for electricity production will be delivered to the power plants soon.
