Prime Minister Ranil Wickramasinghe says that he regrets the attack on journalists by the security personnel.
“The Prime Minister deeply regrets the assault by security personnel on journalists who went to cover the ongoing protests. Freedom of the media is paramount to Sri Lanka’s democracy. The Prime Minister calls upon the security forces as well as the protesters to exercise restraint to prevent acts of violence and to ensure the safety of the public,” the Prime Minister’s Media Department announced.
This assault took place on 6 journalists including a female journalist who went to cover the protest in front of the Prime Minister’s private residence in Colombo.
Meanwhile, opposition leader Sajith Premadasa says that this is a shameful incident.
“I totally condemn the inhumane attack on Sirasa channel journalists by the police officers who were stationed to protect Ranil. Shame on you, illegitimate prime minister,” says the opposition leader.
