    Sea waves may come ashore – A red notice from the Met Department

    Meteorologists have warned that there is a possibility of sea waves reaching the land in sea areas from Puttalam to Pottuvil via Colombo Galle and Hambantota.

    The Meteorological Department has also issued a red notice regarding the speed of the wind due to the activation of South West Monsoon conditions.

    Thus, it has been warned that the sea will be very rough as the speed may increase to 60-70 km per hour in those sea areas.

    The sea areas off the coast extending from Colombo to Hambantota via Galle will be very rough. The sea areas off the coast extending from Puttalam to Colombo and from Hambantota to Pottuvil will be rough. The other sea areas around the island will be moderate.

    There is a possibility to increase swell waves (about 2.5 – 3.5 m) in the sea areas off the coast extending from Puttalam to Pottuvil via Colombo, Galle and Hambantota. There is a possibility that near-shore sea areas off the coast extending from Puttalam to Matara via Colombo and Galle, may experience surges due to swell waves.

    Under this situation, the meteorologists have also advised to completely avoid fishing and shipping activities in the sea areas from Colombo to Galle to Hambantota during the next 24 hours.

    Meanwhile, from Galle to Colombo, sea waves came ashore from Akurala, Kahwa, and Thelwatte areas and caused minor damage to properties.
