Food prices have increased by 80%

The rise in prices of food and non-food items has increased inflation to 54.6% last month, the Central Bank of Sri Lanka said.

Compared to last May, inflation increased by 12.80% in June.

In May, it stood at 39.1%.

According to the surface inflation measured by the annual point change in the Colombo Consumer Price Index (2013=100), the annual point inflation in the food category has increased from 57.4 percent in May 2022 to 80.1 percent in June.

Annual point inflation in the non-food category rose to 42.4 percent in June from 30.6 percent in last May.

The monthly change in the Colombo Price Index for June 2022 was 12.80 percent, driven by a 6.81 percent and 5.99 percent rise in prices of items in both the food and non-food categories, respectively.

In the food category, the prices of fresh fish, vegetables, bread, rice and milk powder rose significantly in June 2022.

Further, within the non-food category, prices of items in the sub-categories mainly transport (petrol, diesel, school transport fares and bus fares), restaurants and hotels, education (tuition fees for secondary education), and housing, water, electricity, gas and other fuels (Maintenance/Repairs and LP Gas) increased.

Also, annual average inflation rose to 18.4 percent in June 2022 from 14.2 percent in May 2022.

Core inflation on an annualized point basis, which reflects the economy’s underlying inflation, rose to 39.9 percent in June 2022 from 28.4 percent in May 2022, and annual average core inflation rose to 13.3 percent in June 2022 from 10.2 percent in May 2022.
