The Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe has issued a special gazette notification amending the restrictions and conditions on the possession of foreign currency.

Accordingly, the limit on the amount of foreign currency that can be held by a person residing or staying in Sri Lanka has been reduced from USD 15,000 to USD 10,000.

If it is in another foreign currency, the value should be equal to the above amount.

The following order has been issued by the Minister of Finance under Section 8 of the Foreign Exchange Act No. 12 of 2017 with the intention of attracting foreign currency in the hands of the people in this country to the formal banking system.

This Gazette was issued on the 16th of this month and is effective with a general amnesty of 14 days from that date.
