Welgama acquitted of a bribery case

The Colombo Magistrate’s Court has ordered the release of MP Kumara Welgama from a case filed by the Bribery Commission against him.

A case has been filed alleging that Kumara Welgama had created a non-existent post in the Sri Lanka Transport Board during his tenure as the Minister of Transport and caused losses to the government.

The case was heard before Colombo Chief Magistrate Nandana Amarasinghe.

Kumara Welgama had earlier objected at the previous hearing that the case could not be taken up as the three Commissioners of the Bribery Commission had not given their written approval in the case.

Accordingly, the Bribery Commission informed that the case would be withdrawn on the relevant objection while retaining the right to sue again.

Kumara Welgama has been acquitted after the Bribery Commission was allowed to withdraw the case.
